Even though No. 85 claimed on Twitter that he couldnt sleep the night before his debut on ABCs Dancing With the Stars Monday, he appeared confident and like he was enjoying himself when he and partner Cheryl Burke danced to Its Just Begun by the Jimmy Castor Bunch. They were the first of 11 couples to perform.
The shows three judges each gave him six points for a total of 18 out of a possible 30 points, drawing boos from an audience that included wide receiver Terrell Owens.

Head judge Len Goodman told him he needed to improve his posture for next weeks foxtrot, but he and the other judges also praised his performance.

You came out like a tiger, Goodman said. You're a rough diamond at the moment, you need a bit more polish, and youre going to sparkle. Youve got great potential."

Judge Carrie Ann Inaba called his performance primal.

Theres some raw something happening that is going to take you very far, she said.

Ochocinco said of his own performance: I got a lot of things I have to fine-tune in order to look like a pro...I still got a long way to go.

Sue Gilkey of Loveland, chairwoman of the annual local Dancing for the Stars benefit and an amateur competitive ballroom dancer for 15 years, says she would have given Ochocinco a seven, agreeing that he needs to work on his posture.

Being the first man out, I was impressed right from the get-go on Chad's cha cha cha, she said. His timing was very good, (and) I feel he connected very well with Cheryl. This was his dance for sure, and he will definitely be back next week.

The highest-scoring couple was pop singer Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls and professional dance partner Derek Hough with 25 points.

All 11 couples will perform second routines on the next show, airing at 8 p.m. Monday. The couple with the lowest combined judges scores and viewers phone, text and online votes for both performances will be sent home during a results show at 8 p.m. the following night.

Multiple Web sites and magazines have predicted Ochocinco will go far in the competition. Entertainment Weekly magazine picked him to win it, noting that football players Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith, Jason Taylor and Warren Sapp all came in first or second place on Dancing With the Stars. Burke previously led Smith and Cincinnati boy bander Drew Lachey to victory.

Shortly before his debut, Ochocinco told his more than 800,000 followers on Twitter: I am feeling good about tonight, cant wait! Be great 4 #15, referring to teammate Chris Henry, who died last year.

But the night before, he told dance partner Cheryl Burke on Twitter that he was too nervous to sleep and claimed to be watching the 2009 Meryl Streep movie Its Complicated while eating Krispy Kreme doughnuts and drinking Red Bull.

I have no previous dance experience at all except in the end zone, and every time Im there I get fined by the NFL commissioner, he said in his Dancing with the Stars intro. Creativity is not wanted in the NFL, but Im glad I can bring it here to the dance floor and not get in trouble for it.
