You are absolutely correct! I knew it was an untimely death and an accident-- I must have assumed it was an automobile accident. It was a great loss-- he was a wonderful conductor.

I met the conductor of this lovely Pines of Rome, Istvan Kertez, when as a young student I turned pages for a piano/conductor rehearsal of Otello at the Ravinia Festival north of Chicago. James McCracken was Otello-- incredible-- Pilar Lohengar was Desdemona-- lovely artist-- the Iago was Hungarian. Kertez died in a auto accident not long thereafer. When we all left Pilar Lohengar said "Aufwiedersehen, bis domani!" Sweet memory. Inspiring experience. We then had lunch with Christa Ludwig...

@olympicrange Thanks for sharing your memory but now I'm surprised. According to my information the conductor's death was caused by drowning into the sea near the coast of Israel.
