wouldnt building a replica shay be nice to see
-
@southparkline1 i understand
-
@Strasburg1991 It is and thats one reason why building a replica would be better than rebuilding #9 in my opinion.
-
@southparkline1 even the firebox grates?? wow thats a lot of metal to scrap
-
@Strasburg1991 Yes and that is a pretty good chunck of the original locomotive. Don't forget the entire cab is also brand new.
-
@southparkline1 so just the entire boiler is what you're saying.
-
@Strasburg1991 No but from what I know the running gear is ok and the cab is pretty much brand new. The tender which is still sitting in strasburg will cost $300,000 to restore. (the 9 used 74's tender while in operation). The #1 is very similar to CB&Q #537 which was leased to the C&S so there has been talk about making #1 to resemble 537 when it is restored.

@Strasburg1991 First of all the locomotive is 127 years old and that doesn't help. 2nd, the FRA was breathing down the loops necks about how the locomotive because it has I believe a lap seam boiler which is in no way the prefered boiler for safety. The locomotive also has a cylinder bore that is nearly cracked in half. The boiler also had patches which raised red flags with CDOT and the FRA. All I can say is that the #9 is a very tired and worn out engine.

@southparkline1 does EVERYTHING on # 9 need to be replaced if it were to run again
-
@southparkline1 and also, send three mikes from guatemala. dress them up as scrapped siblings from the DRGW
Good to see 9 back in service.
