It's actually very original. How many other artists have completely changed their style, become more serious songwriters, and then make a shot-for-shot remake of a video they made in their 'pop' days. Most singer/songwriters take themselves way too seriously to do that. And this pulled off being funny, nostalgic, and kind of serious, too. It's not unoriginal to emulate source material if you do it for a specific purpose and in a specific context.
