Morta is partially fossilized oak, and is also known as "bog oak" because it's typically found submerged in bogs and swamps. Because it's partially petrified, it takes significantly more effort to carve it than the usual briar wood. I typically use a shaping wheel, but this stuff is so hard that I have to use this belt grinder, and even at that, I can use up to two belts during the process. This clip is at the tail end of roughing in the pipe, where it has really started to take shape.

  • How does bog oak smoke compared to briar?

  • @AerieForgeandPipe It has similar burn characteristics to Briar. The flavor is entirely different though, It is very earthy and really shines with balkans, English, or other strong and flavorful tobaccos.
