Satan and Adam (Sterling Magee and Adam Gussow, plus Dave Laycock on drums) play an old blues song at Red's Lounge in Clarksdale, Mississippi on July 5, 2008.

Gussow is playing an off-the-shelf Marine Band harp, key of C, through a Shure PE-5H mic and two old tube amps--a Premier Twin-8 and a Kay 703--hooked up in tandem through a Boss DD-2 digital delay.

  • AG - Been a big fan of your playing since your YouTube series started. This video footage is a fantastic lesson to all up and coming blues players on how to accompany another musician without smothering the sound. Your playing here is both skillful and tasteful and adds so much to Sterling's performance. This is how it should be and I'll be pointing all the harp players I play with to this video.

    Keep up the good work!

  • Nib and kokoro:

Thanks! I try to do the best job I know how in whatever harp-intensive situation I find myself. I'm delighted to have been given the chance to play these gigs with Sterling; back in 2002, nobody would have imagined we'd be doing it all over again.

  • sweet!

  • This is the first song I heard you two do and is still my favorite...it holds all the hooks that I refer to as your -handle-

  • love it !!!

  • Satan sounds fresh as a daisy, too. Has he been practicing?!

  • Loved it. I particularly dug how you picked your moments, and you were able to play under the main melody while Mr. Satan was singing, combined with the call-response formula.

Mr. Magee also has a very groovy droning style of playing that works well with your harp and Mr. Laycock's drumming.

It would be a real treat to see how you guys approached some of the other blues standards, like Terraplane and Statesboro Blues.

(Then again, I'm just a hopeless delta fan)

  • Thanks for posting. It wood be great to see a harp lesson for this classic tune.

  • prof adam makes you want to keep playing to catch up with him !!!! great job
