I took a fantastic trip to Daikanbou in Aso City, Kumamoto-ken here the ancient volcano exploded and then sunk into the earth creating a massive caldera. The caldera is so large that towns and farms actually sit at its bottom.

The Daikanbou is the highest point along the Northern edge of the crater at 935.9m. The slops leading down to the bottom are steep and its feels as if one is in an airplane looking down upon the earth.

A pleasant surprise was a group of 3 paragliders riding the winds around the point. Apparently this is the place to be in Kyushu if you paraglide.

I have to say that the Aso-Kuju area is one of my favorite spots in Kyushu and I keep going back. If you have the chance, check it out. It is a great area to cycle too.

  • I think you live in Kyushu right? my place is really near Fukuoka and Aso.

  • @ploysr08 Yeah, I live in Oita!

  • i hope you are okay from the earthquake/tsunami!!! :(

  • @AuburnGuy1994 Thanks you! Luckily I am in southern Japan, but I feel for all the people up north. The disasters of last Friday will definitely be a turning point for Japan and its future. I hope rescue efforts continue and people continue to volunteer and donate. Thank you for the messages.

  • omfg! that place looks so gorgeous!!! r u still touring japan?! TT^TT i wanna tag along too!!!!!

omg. i'm scared of heights but i think i wanna go gliding too!

do u jump off the cliff and let the wind take u or do u use a plane?

  • @animelovergurlopzv The paragliders would set everything up on the edge of the cliff and then pull the sail up to catch the wind, like pulling a kite into the air, and be off flying. It definitely requires courage.

I'm still in Japan, and now that the weather is warming up I will be back exploring again :)
