I've been playing around in Audacity singing the melody and then recording the harmony vocals while listening to the melody track but i can't seem to keep it in time with each other

Shawn, in Audacity you have to sort of sync stuff up after it's recorded, which is one of the problems of with Audacity. In Audacity, zoom in and slide the tracks to make the line up. But if you try Reaper, it will work much better. Hope that helps.

Try the Antares Harmony Engine EVO to generate harmonies for you. My assumption was that you would sing all the harmonies - Sorry for the confusion

Joshua - Yes you can, absolutely. In any mutlitrack audio software, the free Audacity included, you can put the mp3 on one track, and your voice on other tracks...as many as you want - 3-part-4-part harmony, etc. Hope that helps.
