I wanted to pass on some machining knowledge. Stainless prefers SLOWER speeds. Especially when drilling with a single flute step drill. I suspect the reason you had better success with the cordless drill is the electric handheld was going far too fast. I noticed you attempted to change the speed setting on the corded drill, but typically they are just too unreliable. Just an FYI- Dewalt is a subsidiary of Black & Decker.

by the way you should use a better oil to lubricate the steel and the drill bit while drilling, you are not supposed to see the smoke :)

can't wait to see the final result, too bad I can't taste it :)
