The timpani he's using for the C in the solo is tuned really poorly.
The orchestra isn't at all enthusiastic about this music. ***

why is there only a part of it?

Having had him for 21 years as music director of the Bavarian State Opera it was a golden age in Munich and most definitely shaped my understanding of music a great deal. In his book "In the interest of clarity - my life with music" (Im Interesse der Deutlichkeit - Mein Leben mit der Musik) he underlines his ideals of being a conductor and about musicianship. Unfortunately the book afaik hadn't been edited in english translation.

Dr. Robert Greenberg does a magnificent lecture on the life and time of Shostakovich. I bought it from The Teaching Company. (NO, I don't work for them!) What Hell Shostakovich endured from Stalin and his toddies and what brilliant music he wrote in spite of them.

I love this symphony. It's such an inspiration that shostakovich composed this when he was 19. It only gets better with each symphony!
Great Perfofmance!!

the more i see videos of Sawallisch conduct - the more amazing to me he becomes. Sadly, he has retired from conducting. I seriously hope his stature among conductors increases over time, and he is appreciated more in death than he was in life. Remarkable!!!
