I spent a day in Liverpool recently shooting five of the six of the world heritage sites, with a loose brief of capturing the the detail of built environment to understand the the city as a whole, the resulting production to last no longer than 60 seconds.
I decided to capture a key building from each of the 6 Heritage sites - Albert Dock, Pier Head, Commercial Centre, Stanley Dock, Cultural Quarter, Lower Duke St. with a time lapsed DSLR and then to snap a pile of detail shots to cut in with the time lapse footage. The sound of the environment is also a contributing factor to the feel of a space so I took a little zoom H2 mic to get some rough wild tracks.
So often we wander through Liverpool gazing through the shop windows at the things we don't need or cant afford so it was really great to spend time to look up above the glass shop fronts and study the bits that are usually overlooked.
A couple of tips on creating nice time lapse:
1. Buy a timer controller, named brands can be expensive but cheep one are available and do a good job.
2. Shoot wide with a long depth of field
3. Drag your shutter, so the movement looks blurred and gives the added effect of movement. 1/3 sec or more - I invested in an ND filter to help to achieve this.
