After being warned about making illegal claims on its infant formula, Wyeth is launching a new campaign for its SMA infant formula. Who will ensure mothers receive accurate information?

  • could i point out that mothers that cant breast feed for health reason, are made to feel like monsters for using formula. My baby is perfectly healthy

  • That is not the intention. It is a mothers decision how she feeds her child. Baby Milk Action has a campaign specifically for mothers who use formula who want accurate and independent information on formulas and how to reduce the risks of using them. See our website.

  • This is about a mother's right to accurate, independent information on infant feeding instead of company propaganda.

If you look at information from companies they all claim their formula is the best and make claims that often do not stand up when you scrutinize the research. Nor do most companies warn carers that powdered infant formula is not sterile and the simple steps needed to reduce the risks.

See our 'safer formula campaign' on the Baby Milk Action website.

  • I agree with you to a point, but it does upset me when powerful people take advantage of vulnerable people i.e. milk companies seducing third world mothers and putting babies lives at risk and I support people putting pressure on to stop things like this. I think it is the responsibility of the strong to protect the weak so as far as that is concerned I wouldn't leave others alone. You can't stand by and ignore crimes against humanity, but in general I agree with you.

  • i love it people get so wound up classic . do what you do and leave others alone theres no right or wrong way its what works for you .

  • I don't do things just cos the govnmnt tells me! Why do you think we are called mammals? It's because we have evolved to breastfeed. It is far more normal in a world wide historical context for babies to be breastfed. I educate myself and make up my own mind. I don't think you could say what u do if u knew what u wer talking about. U hv an uninformed opinion.

  • because they brain wash people if tomorrow thay changed their mind and said the opposite people like you would follow whatever it is they were saying just because the govement say or do something it dont mean its right.

  • I think you are ignorant to make this comment. Where is your authority? The World Health Organisation recommends exclesive breastfeeding for 6 months on the basis of extensive research. Babies are precious and need us to give them the best we can. In the civilised world we can complacently say that it doesn't matter whether it's breast or bottle, but why in that case has the British government banned the advertising of formula for babies under 6 months?

  • formular is attually better as vit and min can be added the only thing brest milk has going for it is the anti boddies and even then breast fed babies can still get sick people esp men should shut up its up to the mother

  • No a mother should not be considered a monster if she chooses it. However, many women are not informed well enough about breastfeeding, not given the right support to succeed and to continue for the baby's best start. I don't blame mothers, I blame our society in general for how they don't support breastfeeding enough.

  • I don't think you should feel like a monster, but it is true that breast milk is best.

In third world countries, especially though, the formula companies are making it seem that formula is better, when it is scientifically false. They are putting profit ahead of a baby's health. That is disgusting.
