Rodrigo rarely spoke about the piece, however shortly before his death he said it was for the child he and his wife lost due to a miscarrige.

El Concierto de Aranjuez was inspired and written for the gardens of the Palacio Real de Aranjuez, the spring home of King Felipe II in the second half of the sixteenth century and subsequently rebuilt in the mid-eighteenth century by Fernando VI. The piece attempts to transport the listener to the sounds of nature to another place and another time.
