The LP (a limited pressing) from which this recording what made was given as a gift by Mme. Steber to a neighbor/friend/collector (pressed on her own label and in fact, put into sleeves by her and friends).
It is a live performance from 1.13.1962 with the Greater Trenton Symphony Orchestra.
The concert showed Steber in matured and fine vocal form with a less innocent, but equally vivid, reading of this, a song associated primarily with her. The program also included the Songs of the Rose of Sharon (LaMontaine).
Particularly notable is her Steber's impeccable diction, that doesn't become fussy or distracting, but rather is always impelling the music/story forward and frees the listener to experience the highly-detailed atmosphere that Barber was so skilled at divining.
