I love this "pull yourself up by your own bootstraps" bullshit. The point is that the gap between the very rich and the very poor is growing, because ordinary, hard-working, middle-class folks are being crushed by healthcare premiums at a time when they can least afford them.
No one is saying every citizen should become a ward of the state, but the government does have a basic responsibility to ensure the health and safety of its citizens, and healthcare reform is part of that responsibility.
