Bennie from Nebraska answers the simple question "why is health care important to you?" on AFSCME's Highway to Health Care Tour.

Health care isn't working for America's middle class. It's too expensive and uncertain -- and it's crippling the economy. Because Congress is on recess this month we rented an RV and converted it into a mobile action center to crisscross the country -- to states and districts where the most important votes are -- to keep the pressure on.

Please join us by adding your name to our Highway to Health Care map and sending a message to Congress: we need to fix health care and we need to do it now. http://www.highway2healthcare.org

  • the current bill specifically DENIES illegal aliens from having the benefits of the public insurance plan.

To get the plan you must be a verified American citizen. This is why it insists on an insurance card issued to anyone participating in it.

  • continued...

    what are the needs?...

    3. Illegal aliens (or "undocumented workers" if you prefer)-they're here ILLEGALLY, and should not be given any "rights" just because they're here.

If they need care, fine. Provide emergency life-saving care, and once stable, send them back for further care in their own country. (INS will have to provide the transport back??).

This group is NOT dumb. They know EXACTLY what they are doing and how to play the system.

    We shouldn't enable them.

  • what are the needs?

    1. unemployed who can't afford COBRA...yes, a need

    2. disabled-they already have social security and Medicaid- do these programs need fixing?

    3. self-employed-these are a group that have options now, but need affordable choices.

    4. people who are healthy but have been refused private health coverage because of pre-existing conditions- this should be examined further...by insurers...and develop 'risk absorption' strategies, to cover these people

    ....more to come...
