I am Prakash Vaithyanathan, a Science Teacher from Chennai, India.
I discovered that Crocin tablets (paracetamol tablets available in India) can be used to help synthesize Gold nanoparticles and iron nanoparticles. Ofcourse, we need to use the corresponding gold and iron salts.
Crocin tablet powdered firstly is dissolved in 45 ml of de- ionized water (in the movie, I had said "doubly ionized" instead of "de-ionized". I am sorry about that and my apologies for the viewers) and filtered. To 10 ml of this filtered solution, we add 25 microliters of gold salt solution and there we are.
In this experiment I used a valid crocin tablet because it is illegal to possess date expired tablets in India. The principle is clear and it will work with date expired tablets too. This gives us an idea that we can use the date expired tablets for synthesizing various nanoparticles in the lab and use them for experiments. One can synthesize gold, silver, iron and all other nanoparticles and use them for various experiments. I synthesized silver nanoparticles using tablet solutions and used them to tackle bacteria (gram positive and gram negative) related problems.
In fact Gold nanoparticles have been projected to be useful for cancer treatment and also in dye sensitised solar cells. Likewise iron, silver nanoparticles are used for water treatment.
A little bit of Scientific thinking will help us identify the list of medicines that can be potentially used for these applications and so the date expired versions of them can be used instead of disposing them in whatever "DISPOSAL OF BIO-MEDICAL WASTES ACT" permits. This in some sense qualifies well enough to be a Green Process.
This experiment was done at Prof.Mukesh Doble's lab at IIT Madras. I express my sincere thanks to Prof.Mukesh doble, Dr.Prabhawathy, Mr.Boopalan for all the help.
My sincere "Thanks" to my students - KARAN, SHANE AND DIVYA for helping me film the video. Great job, guys...

Besides teaching, I am also doing research in Cancer. Recently I came up with a new drug combination that works very effective for Breast cancers. IIT Madras came up with a press release and subsequently the story was published here:

Please note: My name has been misspelled. instead of Prakash Vaidyanathan, it should be Prakash Vaithyanathan. I have applied for a patent and have written to so many Professors in the world - Prof.G.Lithgow, Prof.Benz, etc. I am hopeful that they will come forward for collaboration.
In fact, thioflavin-T can be combined with taxol or any other chemo drug or to tackle drug resistant cell lines of the breast cancer etc. I have applied for patents for both the afore-mentioned cancer related work.
If you are interested ( provided you are from an accredited research institution - because I have approached RGCB, TMC, NCCS-Pune etc for help), please contact:
