We performed the US premiere of this metronome-work, San Francisco New Music Ensemble, SF Conservatory back in 1970.....all 100 microphones is a gigantic space, ten per player. One heard thick rain, but as the metronomes 'ran down' it thinned out....until one heard rhythmic patterns everywhere.....until it just vanished like a rain storm. An enjoyable ear event, and once the audience caught on, it was totally silent to the end.
Cowards! This is like the natural sound of Starlings in migration or rain falling. Listen to Keiji Haino for music and then come back to this as a concept and it is pretty appealing!
for Ligeti, this is an important statement of purpose towards the types of rhythms he would later pursue. I wouldn't say it's very appealing to me, however.
in the beginning, it's hilarious, and towards the end, it's quite interesting. the long stretch of boredom between the two is what turns me off.
it's not fair to label this "not a composition": it's a conceptual piece in the humorous Fluxus spirit.
Well it´s music in deffinition, the art of combining the sounds with time. But franckly, this isn´t something i would be listening more than once(it´s the idea, nothing else) and, if you don´t watch the video, you wouldn´t even understand this stuff. music should have value itself.

the director's shot choice is also pretty funny.
