The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a World Heritage Railway. It is one of the very few remaining steam operated railways in the world.

Opened on June 15,1899, it operates on meter gauge (1000 mm); and is the only rack and pinion hill railway in India, operating on a gradient of 1 in 12.50. The X Class engines of 0-8-2T type were built between 1914 and 1952 at the Swiss Locomotive & Machine Works (SLM), WInterthur. Few of these are still in active service on this line, being the mainstay of train operations on the steep gradient of the rack section between Mettupalayam and Coonoor.

Seen in this video is the SLM built steam engine X-37395, converted from coal firing to oil firing mode in 2002, pushing the train toward Coonoor. This conversion enhanced the vintage engine's pushing power.

However, in 2009 the railway authorities re-converted the engine back to coal firing mode, and sent another steam engine, X-37392, for conversion to oil firing at the Golden Rock workshop, Trichy.
