1994 Toshiba CF26C30 Intermittant Power Up, Part 9, Capacitor ESR.

OK, I need to start doing some probing for voltages but not just yet. What I REALLY need is a capacitor ESR meter to test electrolytics while the little beauties are still in circuit. First they have to be completely discharged though.
I might as well just build one!
Note. I am making these vids for entertainment. TV have hazardous voltages that will kill you. TV CRT's can implode if hit or scratched in a weak part like the neck.

The meter went together pretty good. I only need 2 sets of glasses and a magnifyer

Have you checked the Horizontal Output Transistor for shorts/open, to eliminate that as a potential source of trouble?

@mznxb9872 Thanks for your comment. I'll check the H.O.T next video. I want to test the electrolytics because I read on a blog that there is a bypass cap or two near the switching regulator that can cause this power up problem. I built the ESR meter to test the caps, just in case there is another bad one. That way I don't chase my tail if there is a bad cap that is in the circuit and I'm testing out other things instead.

@MrDennis8805 Well, I just figgure I might find another bad electrolytic. If not, then I'll keep progressing to more likely things, like the H.O.T and that 9 Volt Regulator. I been reading a lot on blogs and people replace stuff like the yoke, regulator, H.O.T. and they stil lhave this problem. This is why I'm doing the ESR testing on the electolytic caps just in case. You know, take 10 minutes and try to eliminate something small, instead of going for the bigger things.

@MrDennis8805 Thanks! Hopefully the ESR meter will show a bad electrolytic in circuit. The one that's the problem. I definately had a bad 18 year old cap in the vertical. I figgure after 18 years I might have some more bad ones.

You're right though. It could be a transistor or even a shorted flyback. Anything that puts a greater current load on various circuits will cause the set to shut down. It might be shutting down in 1/2 second instead of not powering up at all, if that makes sense.
