In August 2008 a fault in the Trans-Niger pipeline resulted in a significant oil spill at Bodo Creek in Ogoniland. The oil poured into the swamp and creek for weeks, covering the area in a thick slick of oil and killing the fish that people depend on for food and for their livelihood. Despite the damage being caused, the leak was not stopped until 7 November. A second spill occurred in the same area in December 2008. The spills are the responsibility of the Shell Petroleum Development Company.

Almost three years on the oil spill pollution has not been cleaned up. Amnesty International visited Bodo in May 2011. This video shows the ongoing damaged and the human impact.
