I remember seeing Liberace do this song on The Ed Sullivan Show (I saw the rerun on TV land over a decade ago). It must have been part of his regular repertoire.

My aunt Elsa lived across from Liberace.
Her husband Terry made a fortune selling Australian sheep to middle eastern countries once a year, when these people celebrate the mass-slaughtering of sheep (for religious reasons) and... but I'm getting sidetracked... She said Mr Liberace could be very nice and was generous, although he DID run over her dog with his Cadillac 'Enterprise' once, and didn't apologize at all.

what a lovely man, a joy to watch end a thrill to listen to.
You are right about the compilation. The first 40 seconds are Mack the Knife played the regular way. The rest is a compilation of STYLES on the same song, Mack the Knife. If you look at showmanlee's video of this song, I believe it has the part where Liberace explains what he's going to play and how in this short and small but wonderful and joyful little chunk of history.

He plays with such passion and seeming abandon that one cannot help to want to play the piano. Dare I say he makes the piano interesting again?

Yours is a very interesting comment. To us who play, it is the most interesting and fascinating instrument of all. He, and others, inspire us to practice, practice, practice. But to those who don't play, the piano has become almost irrelevant. That's what your comment is interesting. I hadn't before seen it from your perspective. BTW, do you know what the name Fausto means?

Thank you. I am aware who Faust is, but I do not know what the name Fausto means. Would you be so kind to tell me?

Fausto means festive and celebratory with lot of pomp.
I love Liberace's version of this song, and I love Ella's too, where she sings, "...AND now Ella and her fellas are makin' are makin' are makin' a wreck of this song!"

the reason the piano has become irrelevant to people who don't play is because all they hear are the crummy players on the pop scene who think playing quarter note block chords constitutes "playing piano." they don't hear anything really flavorful or fancy so it's not as interesting.

@hehawaiiau07 You are so right. You hit the nail on the head. The piano will come back because quality never dies. There are phases and fads and stars and stardom come and go with their tides, but good quality never fades away.
