"A Valentine Out of Season" is a music for prepared piano, written by John Cage, 1944. The title refers to the break-up of Cage's marriage. This music is a set of three brief pieces, the first piece is slow and chromatic, the second a vigorously rhythmic dance, and the last combines the characteristics of the two preceding pieces.
The piano player is Jean Kirstein.

  • You put objects like nuts and bolts on the piano strings and it gives a plucked, percussive quality to the sound, in addition to reducing the decay dramatically. Of course, the timbre will change depending on the type of object used, often with surprising and unexpected results.

  • So shame.

    I love it.

Are you a little bit deaf? The pain and remorse is obvious, not even by modernist standards. It should be obvious to anyone.

  • This is truly an awful rendition of a marriage broken. Did he not feel any type of pain? Any remorse about this marriage? This piece sounds almost joking.

  • i love this so much !!

  • Brilliant.

  • I have never understood why this piece is called " a valentine out of season" isn't st. valentine's a happy day for lovers? I thought exactly the opposite thing: that he had, while having trouble in his relationship, a happy period not in springtime and so "out of season" - but thats obviouly wrong. Could you explain it to me?
