The name Avignon comes from "Avenio" which means "town of violent winds." In the 14th century, this city in the South of France was the seat of the Papacy, the "French Vatican." The Palais des Papes, an austere-looking fortress dominates the city, the surrounding Ramparts, and the remains of a 12th-century bridge over the Rhone River. Beneath this outstanding example of Gothic architecture, the impressive walls of the Popes' Palace flanked by four mighty towers, the Petit Palais, and the Provencal Romanesque Cathedral of Notre-Dame-des-Doms, complete an exceptional group of monuments that testify to the leading role played by Avignon in 14th-century Christian Europe. This architectural group of monuments has been ranked by UNESCO a World Heritage site. The Popes' Palace is the biggest Gothic palace in all of Europe (15,000 m2 of floor space, which is the equivalent of 4 Gothic cathedrals). The famous bridge, Pont St. Bénezet, now retains only four of its original 22 arches. The best way to explore Avignon is to wander through its maze of medieval streets and stroll around the promenade leading to the gardens and the Rocher des Doms.
