It's odd, that while Ampex was the king of magnetic recording, they made horrible video tape! Fuji made some great stock, but don't use it after 5 passes! It was only good for camera masters. After 5 passes, toss it out. I remember playing back the "Merv Griffen Show" that was recorded on Fuji stock. By the end of the show the heads were clogged, and when it rewound, a 12" piece of oxide pulled apart from the backing. The best stock was 3M. Long lasting & consistent good quality.

This has got to be the best vid on explaining how to care for analog tape. I gotta show my friends this the next time they pop a 2" reel of ATR magnetic tape on my mci jh24. This is a nice way of explaining it. I love this post.

Yes. Clean after EVERY pass. I have a Scully 280-8. It sounds like alotta work, but, it is worth it.
