Revellers celebrate Bonfire Night with spectacular parade

Revellers in the town of Lewes have been celebrating the annual 'Bonfire Night' with spectacular parades and firework displays. The Bonfire Night celebrations mark the failure of a plot by Catholic conspirators in 1605 to kill King James I and blow up Parliament. Britons traditionally set off fireworks and burn effigies of the conspirator Guy Fawkes, who was discovered with barrels of gunpowder under the Houses of Parliament. In Lewes, the inhabitants take the celebrations more seriously, remembering 17 Protestants that were burned at the stake in the town in 1557 with 17 burning crosses carried by the Cliffe Bonfire Society.

Now that is very VERY interesting ! The Valencians ( of Spain ) have a Festival called Las Fallas in which they burn about £25 000 000 worth of "Ninots" - massive wooden constructions which they work on throughout the year. It looks damn good down there in Lewes. But for fireworks beyond the Ken `o` Men see : "Mascleta Nocturna en Valencia." Ha ha !!
