Very nice! This really takes me back to when I had fish. I had cichlids as well and I got quite a few successful breedings with several different pairs of fish. I had a yellow labidochromis who was a terrific mother...almost too terrific for her own good. It took a lot for her to spit out her babies. If she wasn't in a tank all by herself, she would hold on to them for so long that they'd end up dying in her mouth. She was almost too protective. But we had 2 or 3 successful spawns with her. :)

Omg that's so cute, nice video and hope the babies are okay!
How can you tell when an african cichlid is pregnet? I am upgrading my 20 gallon to a 55 in a few weeks for my african cichlids. I have two bluew zebras, one yellow lab, an albino zebra, and an auratus cichlid. They are all only about an inch long. I will add about 15-20 more cichlids of similar size when I get my 55.

@Fx4Ranger2002 The fish will stop eating, but this could be also a sign of illness, however, there's a difference in behavior between ill cichlid and the one holding eggs. If it was holding, it will approach food but never put it in her mouth in the early days of holding, while the ill might chew it and spit it. later on when the eggs hatch, the jaw of the fish will be noticeably wide and you will be able to see the fry inside her mouth, at this point the fish will put some food to feed the fry

U should breed frontosa they can hold up 2 50 fry

@Firebelliedkid I would love to but my tank is just small for frontosas, it's only 30 gallons. I currently have juvenile tropheus, and got rid of the turtle

Hey, man, nice fish, really lucky!
How are they doing right now? I'm in a similar position w/ this same species! I think I should have left the mother in the container like this one, w/ the babies.
They still have egg sacs, and we've only lost 1 or 2, but I tried letting the mother back into the rest of the tank- lots of fighting.
I'm wondering if you could tell me what you did? :)

@TangLabCorporation make sudden changes to pH and temperature as they might kill the toughest Cichlid... Since I started another comment, I'll tell you the levels. Ammonia & nitrite should be zero, 0.25ppm is the max, above that they are in risk. nitrate below 5ppm. pH 7.5-8.6, between 7 and 7.5 is ok but less than that it's too acidic for them. temperature 25-28. 1st check ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and act quickly, when they're fine adjust pH & temp. over a period of several days, especially pH
