Kalliolle kukkulalle
I am just playing around with the way that one is supposed to sing the melody: shouldn't one find the state of mind and way of living reflected in the piece of music and see how it a song? The traditional Finnish songs reflect a very serious-minded, extremely rational and fractureless state of mind that is also very beautiful view to the world.
I am sorry that I/we do not know any longer how to sing them right...
In my opinion this song reflects better social and emotional skills than what the traditional Finns are typically thought to have had: in order to keep your integrity you must build your life on the things that you have, not on the things (social relationships) that you cannot get in practise, but you can always remember lovingly the ones that have made a lasting emotional impression on you.
Here are the lyrics:
"Kalliolle, kukkulalle rakennan minä majani.
Tule, tule tyttö nuori jakamaan se mun kanssani.
Jollen minä sinua saa, niin lähden täältä kauas pois,
muille maille vierahille, etten sua nähdä vois."
"To rock, to a hill I build my cottage.
Come, come maiden young to share it with me.
If I cannot get you, I will travel far away,
to other unfamiliar countries, so that I could not see you."
could you post the lyrics (and, if it's not too much to ask, a translation) I would love to sing it :)
