The Iowa Department of Natural Resources' Targeted Source Water Protection program investigates how contaminant levels of concern get into a community's shallow alluvial water supply and provides support to help the community implement a source water protection project.

Iowa has experienced an increasing amount of nitrate and other contaminants in shallow alluvial well testing. The purpose of the DNR's Targeted Source Water Protection program is to help communities determine the non-point sources of the contamination and help them implement practices to reduce the amount of contamination reaching their source water for drinking supplies. Additionally, support is provided to help the community implement a project that will help reduce the contamination that's already there and protect the well field into the future.
