European Parliament calls on members to recognize Kosovo's independence. On Thursday, July 8 members of the European Parliament voted to adopt a resolution calling for all member nations to recognize Kosovo's autonomy. The stated goal of the measure is to provide greater unity and effectiveness through a single European Union-wide foreign policy. The new resolution especially requested open recognition of Kosovo from Spain, Slovakia, Romania, Cyprus and Greece, while asking Serbia to remain neutral on Kosovo's proposed inclusion in international organizations. Austrian European Parliament Member Ulrike Lunatchek, who sponsored the bill, stated, "I hope this will give us an opportunity and be an open window to put cooperation in the region on new footing."
Our sincere thanks, Your Excellencies, for your diplomatic efforts to further harmonious relations among member states. May peaceful understanding and respect prevail among all people throughout the European Union and the world.
