@alwaysbehappy95 After the British abolition of the slave trade we (they) set about aggressively stamping out slavery amongst other nations. Notably the US, Spain, France and Arabic countries. This is not to distract from the many thousands of slaves still in bondage in the empire.

Particularly this final scene in which the redcoats free the captives is kinda funny because it was the English merchants who actually made a killing with slave trade for centuries.
Anyway by 1839 Spanish influence in the Americas was quite broken already, having lost the continental territories following the defeat at the battle of Ayacucho (1824), with only Cuba, Puerto Rico -and the Philippines in Asia- left.
Most underrated Spielberg film so far...
