Album: Live at Birdland, 1963 Musicians: John Coltrane — tenor saxophone/soprano saxophone Jimmy Garrison — bass Elvin Jones — drums McCoy Tyner — piano
I can't explain why but this damned recording almost brings tears to my eyes and gives me gooseflesh... Someone's in there screaming for help. It's musical chaos of the most emotional kind. I wanna put my arms around the guy and kiss him, and tell him its gonna be alright! Nothing else could make me write shit like this!
LeRoi Jones, aka, Amiri Baraka, who wrote the liner notes to the LP, wrote that John Coltrane's music is one of the reasons that suicide seems so boring.
Don't listen to this on Youtube, BUY the album!! Really...
