Performed by Judy Garland and Margaret O'Brien in the film 'Meet Me in St. Louis', 1944. This is a High Quality, Full Screen Close Up. I also included an audio excerpt of Margaret O'Brien from Larry King Live, with photo overlay. She tells an endearing story about 'The Cake Walk Hat', Judy's gift to her. ... Of all her talents - singing, acting, dancing - Judy found her greatest love with children.
Under The Bamboo Tree
Words and music by Robert Cole and J. Rosamund Johnson, 1902
*ESTHER*
Down in the jungles lived a maid
Of royal blood though dusky shade
*TOOTIE*
A marked impression once she made
Upon a Zulu
*ESTHER*
From Matabooloo
*TOOTIE*
And every morning he would be
Down underneath the bamboo tree
*ESTHER*
A Waitin' there his love to see
*TOOTIE*
And then to her he's sing
*BOTH*
To her he'd sing
If you like-a me, like I like-a you and we like-a both the same
I like-a say this very day, I like-a change your name.
'Cause I love-a you and lov-a you true and if you-a love-a me
One live as two, two live as one
Under the bamboo tree

  • Saw this movie on TCM last night and fell in love with Tootie all over again--that child was so adorable. Judy was the star of this wonderful family film but Margaret O'Brien was its beating heart, with her wildly vivid imagination and sweet spirit.

  • Judy was always beautiful, but, she was even more stunning as a redhead!

  • sweet Judy!

  • @Riku7070 Nope! haha, aparently so did the director, Vincente because this is when they started their relationship. She was always beautiful/hot (:

  • These are the stories I love of Judy! <3 (:

  • Margaret O'Brien was really enjoying herself doing this number. And so did Judy Garland. It's nice to see a happy little girl and a happy woman playing together. Rest in peace, Judy. We still miss you.

  • @Riku7070 It's not weird at all; she's young and attractive and she always exuded at least a reasonable amount of sex-appeal and charisma.

  • How come when Judy sings it sounds normal but when Margaret sings it suddenly sounds recorded?

  • Is it weird that I find Judy extremely hot in this movie?
