Solid Snake has entered the building.
The first floor of Building #1 contains a lot of tanks, similar to the first floor in MGS1. The enemy patrol pattern is a lot trickier though, especially since entering a room removes your radar view of the floor. You pop your head out of the door again and there might just be an enemy soldier there...
We get introduced to Holly White, who stalks Snake over the codec on frequency 140.15. Kojima reused this frequency in Metal Gear Solid for another female accomplice: Meryl. Holly is full of handy info on the insides of the enemy base. Probably because she is nearby, but we don't know that yet.
The control room shows a layout of the base: a smaller building, a larger building and some sort of forest in between them. Beyond the tallest building lies what seems to be a crevice and a small compound. The music that starts playing in this room is the Zanzibar Land national anthem. You'll notice the soldiers stand firm and salute when they hear it. This is a hint for later in the game.
Floor #2 has the nasty property of making noise when you walk over it, which will trigger guards to investigate. To avoid this, stop moving when a guard is near, or crawl over the floor instead to avoid the noise. Floor #2 has ID-card #1, so it is a good place to start exploring.
The central column of Building #1 has a double elevator system; some of the floors though cannot be reached with an elevator, one or the other. You need to switch on the second floor sometimes. Be quick with this: the patrol routes of the guards on floor #2 all end up at the elevators.
If you get spotted, like me, try hiding under vehicles and such and sit out the alert phase.
A neat trick to score some fast rations is by entering a garbage disposal area in the lower basement and wait for a traqsh bag to fall down. Sometimes there is a useful item in there, but often it is just trash.
Important items:
- Card #1, east of floor #2
- a Ration and Ammo, northeast and west of floor #2
- Ammo, north in basement #1
Where do you save?

About the Subsistence (PS2) version, I don't know of any save points. The original version (be it emulated) has the possibility to save anywhere using the F5 key. It draws up a menu to save to cassette tape (be it emulated); don't forget that this was before floppy discs were a commodity.
You will always start at the last elevator you came through, though.

You can also boot this game with Konami's Game Master 2 inserted in the alternate ROM slot; it enables you to save to floppy disc whatever Konami game you are playing. The elevator restriction doesn't apply here.
