The 1973 Chilean coup d'état was a watershed event in the history of Chile and the Cold War. On 11 September 1973, the democratically elected President Salvador Allende was overthrown in a coup d'état organised by the Chilean military. A military junta took control of the government, composed of the heads of the Air Force, Navy, Carabineros (police force) and the Army led by General Augusto Pinochet.[1] Pinochet later assumed power and ended Allende's democratically elected Popular Unity government.[2][3]

During the air raids and ground attacks that preceded the coup, Allende gave his last speech where he vowed to stay in the presidential palace.[4] Direct witness accounts of his death agree that he committed suicide in the presidential palace.[5][6] After the coup Pinochet established a military dictatorship that ruled Chile until 1990 and that was marked by severe human rights violations. A weak insurgence movement against the Pinochet government was maintained inside Chile by elements sympathetic to the former Allende government.

  • Failed left wing "docummentary".

Alliende government was a failure just like every other socialist government on earth.

Milton Friedmans economic school brought prospierity like no other south american country had, even the ones much richer in natural resources.

  • @Zaragoza2006 First of all, it's Allende. I would like to know in what ways was his government a failure. He nationalized industries, like copper, he created public healthcare, free education, free milk programs for poor children, he redistributed land. He helped the poor not the rich. Friedman's economies helped the hyperinflation in Chile that the US help create in the first place by cutting trade ties. I'm from Chile, so don't bullshit me about the prosperity american economics brought here.

  • @RATMagainstbush8 I don't think he is ignorant. I believe he's quite the opposite. Rather than personally attacking him, how about pointing out specifically which point of his you disagree with and why. It's called debate. Those who lack the necessary skills of debate, chiefly knowledge, will limit themselves to personal attacks. Hopefully a personal attack isn't the only trick you hold in your bag. If it is, then pity on you.

  • @truvianni Right, & half of the Chilean congress was bought by the yankee pricks. Allende knew the influence the Americans had on South America & they did everything to supress his ideas and economic policies, they even placed an embargo on chile hence the whole "Inflation" BS. Let me ask you something. Would you have the balls to shoot yourself in the head if you knew that the DINA where going to torture you or god knows what kind of sadistic punishment you would get? Probably not.

  • @truvianni Bullshit. The CIA killed him. You're just another crypto-fascist. Disgusting.

  • VIVA CHILE , ABAJO LOS CHARLATANES MENTIROSOS POLITIKEROS , MIL VESES FALSOS , MIENTEN PORQUE LES COMVIENE , A VER SI CONSIGUEN UN PUESTO EN LA BUROCRACIA PUBLICA
