In Part 1 Dr. Dunford discusses the affects of nicotine addiction and how it affects our lives. Addiction is a disease and not a weak character trait. People are born with a genetic predisposition toward addiction and become vulnerable the same way as other diseases. Some kids can try a cigarette and walk away, and other kids will not be able to stop. It is unfortunate how the tobacco industry does nothing to try to prevent smoking, instead they advertise their products and have lots of opportunity to get their products to kids. He believes Canada does a great job with their very negative graphic pictures on cigarette packaging. His own son started smoking when he was introduced to free cigarettes on the internet. Kids see cigarettes are not a drug or illegal and don't yet understand addiction. You have to be an adult to understand the real consequences, and by the time Dr. Dunford sees them it has caused major havoc on their life. Medical Director of Emergency Medical Services and his interest lies in seeking ways to exploit the potential of EMS to benefit public safety. Under his mentorship the San Diego EMS system has achieved international recognition for clinical care and research.
