Joker takes Gotham city hostage and demands a ransom. Batman rallies a cross-brand selection of the toughest heroes. Some have doubts...

*This video is strictly a fan video with no affiliation to Marvel or DC. It exists as a tribute to the brave men and women of super hero fandom.*

Originally aired 9/22/1994, on The Chunt Network's "What If?" series, a show that presented live-action speculative fiction based on popular comic book heroes. It was quickly shut down by the 2 major comic book producers at the time, though the creators of "What If?" were granted freedom to create one final episode.

Scrambling to amalgamate the season's remaining story lines into a single cohesive final blowout, senior creative director Gareth Prenus ultimately created what fans of the show consider to be the best "What If?" episode ever, "Super Hero Adventures!". Sadly, during it's one and only airing, The Chunt Network's main transmitter went offline, unknown to staff, who were being ushered outside during a fire alarm. The alarm proved fake, but the fire proved real, as flames ripped through the transmitter room. Groweswood county firefighters were miraculously able to recover the transmitter room's tape deck, but could not find the tape. It remained one of fan fiction's greatest mysteries, and the episode was one of fandom's most sought-after artifacts.

Fast-forward to December 19, 2010. Inside the back room of The Rivoli, Toronto, Canada's famed hot spot, actor/comedian Brian Barlow hosts what is itself a final episode. The Loner Show, the 6-year long monthly evening of solo performance, came to an end but not without it's own mystery; during the show's break, Brian was handed a last-minute submission for the show. A DVD labeled with a Batman logo which was draped with a banner that simply read "Justice" was given to Brian by an anonymous guest. "One last show...why not?" Brian said, as he butted out his last cigarette on the floor. He actually got down and did it. It was that kind of a moment.

Thinking it was going to be a silly prank or a send-off by a friend who's identity would be revealed in the video, Brian put the video on for the crowd who were already well warmed up by the 50-odd acts came before. Imagine the shock when the opening credits began, and the audience witnessed the much-storied final episode of "What If?". Those few in the audience who didn't know the legend of "What If?" were quickly informed by their neighbors (whispers such as "it's the rarest thing ever", "it's the holy grail", and "holy moly, I can't believe this is happening" are but a few of the overheard gems), and the episode ran, in it's entirety, for the first time in 16 years.

After the show, an elated and exhausted Barlow tried to track down the mysterious donor, who was nowhere to be found. And the legend lives once again.

R.I.P. The Loner Show.
