I wrote this tune a few weeks ago while on a weekend vacation in Vermont with friends. I had to actually break up the weekend and drive down to the Boston area for a gig that, believe it or not, started around 11:00 in the morning and went until about 2:30 in the afternoon on a Sunday. I had to leave Vermont around 5:30 that morning just to get there in time for the 9:30 sound check. After the gig, I promptly got in my car and began the 3 hr trek back to Vermont. Where the trip down was rather treacherous in the dark and on a lot of back country, mountain roads, the trip back was considerably different. Still the same roads, but this time in the bright sunshine. It was a beautiful day. I'm not quite sure how I came to imagine this tune. It may have been something I heard on the radio during the drive or it could have been that I was on about two hours of sleep and just ripe for a little inspiration. Whatever the case, I got this in my head and was able to remember it a few days later when I was back at home in New York, sitting in front of a piano, and able to write it down. Obviously, you can get by the title that it was a Sunday and I was driving. I was passing through all these really great looking little New England towns that I believe might be more adequately referred to as "hamlets." So, I decided to call the tune "Sunday hamlet drive." It is easily the simplest thing that I have ever written and possibly my favorite. I feel like it definitely characterizes the mood that I was in that day more that a lot of my other compositions ever have. Just goes to show that sometimes the best things are the simplest. Hope you like it.
