Been working on this for the past couple of days. It's a remake of one of my old prototypes that I have posted a video about before. It uses Cellular Automata, more specifically Conway's "Game Of Life" to create an evolving platform level.

There are two versions shown in the video: The first is simple platform blocks to create the look of the level and the second uses "Bitwise" numbers to automatically tile the level as it is evolving. This version starts at around the 3m50s mark if you'd like to skip forwards to it :).

The last part of the video is a "Gosper Gun" which I am currently designing a game mode the revolves around this Game Of Life pattern.

There is more info in the Annotations and also there is this post at my Blog if you are interested - http://minor78.wordpress.com/2010/09/12/cellular-automata-platform-level/

Thanks for watching :)

  • what happens when everything stablizes? Is there something that spawns new cells to keep it interesting?

  • @LimpsOfMuck

At this stage of the prototype the level would just die. I never got around to trying to figure out a good way of keeping the level going but would have probably had been linked to the "top hat" collection of the game.

  • @MrFlibble1978 Ok. it's still cool regardless

  • Now make this a Minecraft mod... add some new terrain generation mechanisms, etc.

  • Very cool!
