If you're thinking about getting a used outboard, under 10hp, this video may give you something to think about; especially if you're considering a "mid '90s", or more specifically, a 1996 Evinrude or Johnson; essentially the same outboard. And yes, even I found myself repeating "smooth idle" more than a few times... but whether at idle or mid throttle, this outboard ran like a finely tuned watch. The day I shot this video on my Blackberry, I had just sold my 5hp Mercury 2 stroke. While it's a fine little outboard, and a very popular choice for 12ft and under boats, I wanted something a bit larger. But I had never considered the two-cylinder option at this power rating. In a 2-cycle, especially in the 9.9hp and under class, 2 cylinders do make a difference. I apologize up front for the "Blackberry Video Quality", but maybe in the near future I'll remember to take my video camera with me to the lake!? BTW, the '96 Evinrude runs about $350 to $500 used. If your boat can handle the extra weight, more than the single-cylinder 5hp Merc', I'd say this is definitely a motor to consider.

  • Billy, thanks for the nice comments. Seems Johnson and Evinrude had slightly different layouts for the tiller control and transmission levers. But the 2 cylinder engines were identical... or at least I think they were. (?) I store the boat at our city lake, which only allows electric, no gas. If I go to Irvine Lake running the Evinrude... I have to dry-store for 30 days before using it at our city lake because of their "mussel (animal) control". City lake is also used for drinking I think?

  • I have a 1990 8hp evinrude on a 14' monark hull and I must say it runs very well for the pay load I keep in my boat. I gps it with just me in it and 20mph is what I'm getting out of it. I am in the water atleast every other weekend and it has not given me any trouble at all. Nice video!!!

  • your description was very helpful because I am looking for that same year johnson/evinrude 15hp. It looks the same just bigger
