I hate to question the character's motivation here...but when Kite says he wants to play "The World" when it isn't corrupted, I can't help but think that's what makes it interesting.  Without this corruption and data draining, I couldn't help but think that "The World" is boring. Am I wrong? There don't seem to be any quests or any story. It's just pick a set of keywords, grab the treasures, repeat. I don't know, just seems boring.

This is only a game with that story. If you've seen any other .hack media, or are even willing to expand your impressions a little, The World is a huge world with any number of quests and adventures. In the proposed story, it's the most popular MMO in the world, and I don't think having the chance of being put into a coma would make me want to play it more. This isn't the actual World, it's just an RPG.

I'm sorry if it came across as complaining. I really do like the RPGs. And maybe you're right and if I saw the animes, I would appreciate The World more. I'm saying purely as a gamer seeing The World from the outside, I don't see any gameplay that would keep me interested or would make The World the most popular game. That's it. I apologize if anything else was implied.

I don't take offense, I just think you're expecting something out of the game that was never intended to be there in the first place. Were The World an actual MMO, there would be plenty more than is portrayed. It's not, though. It's merely a portrayal of one for the sake of telling Kite's story. It's like saying a town in an RPG doesn't feel like a real town because there are only four houses you can actually enter. It's not a real town, but it was never supposed to be.
