  • Thanks for all the comments on the video. Dr. Stanley is most definitely a living legend, and I was excited to capture this moment.

mcog: I don't think that he ever actually appeared in the film; just this song. It's been a while since I've seen it, though :-)

  • This song is so gnarly, I won't play it for anyone old. You listen to it, and it cuts off stuff like "Death Metal" or other BS at the knees. The darkest imagination is no match - not even close - for the reality that this man knows and sings. Mother of all brutal songs and voices. Beautiful at the same time.

    Life is weird.

  • He has the perfect voice for this song.

  • Wonderful rendition.

  • Wow, hoplyte, you have exposed your knowledge of history. Apparently you have a masters in "Fight Club", well done sir.

  • @pictures999 Technically there is no original writer. It was an oral tradition passed down from generation to generation. Well, it did originate somewhere in Scotland or Ireland, as those people settled around the Appalachian mountains. Rumor has it that it reminded them of home. We do have rolling hills and that song, but there isn't an original "writter." The song was passed down verbally, which accounts for the different variations. Still a bad-ass song though.

  • Back in 1994, I was going through Iowa and got behind a bus with the plate DROFBG. I was like a kid at Christmas. I yelled at my wife, "Hey, that's Ralph Stanley's bus!!" And she said, "You woke me up for THAT!!??"

  • Shut the fu€k up Cy. This is Dr. Ralph Stanley --a legend.

  • Oh Death is a spiritual song written by a Primitive Baptist preacher who fought a spiritual battle with his own alcoholism. He walked to churches and revivals throughout the southern Appalachains performing this piece. Dr. Stanley is a very spiritual person and I've seen him perform this piece several times. These performances never fail to touch my soul. God bless you Ralph Stanley.
