Eye surgeon and senatorial candidate Rand Paul warns that under ObamaCare, Americans could be forced to wait a year and a half merely to see a doctor due to Canadian-style rationing of health care being imposed.

As an eye surgeon with his own private practice, Paul warned that senior citizens could be forced to endure debilitating conditions as a result of health care rationing under the system being readied for passage, and be forced to wait as long as 18 months just to see a doctor as happens in Canada and Britain.

There are 1 million people waiting for any kind of elective surgery in Canada at any one time, he told Newsmax.TVs Ashley Martella.

Canadas so bad that they have a lottery, there are some little towns that have one family doctor, they do a lottery and you can sometimes wait a year and a half to see the doctor, said Paul. I have friends who are eye surgeons in Canada, theyve finished their surgery by September, theyre allotment, theyre given a number of surgeries they can do, when theyre finished in September some of them come to the U.S. and do elective cosmetic eye surgery in the U.S. because theyre not allowed to operate any more in Canada.

In his article, Theres No Such Thing as Free Health Care, Journalist John Stossel highlights how even people with life-threatening conditions are told to wait. A woman with a blocked artery that prevented her from digesting food was told by doctors in British Columbia that she had only weeks to live, but that the surgery was still elective.

The only thing elective about this surgery was I elected to live, said the woman, who traveled to the United States to receive treatment.

Its true that Americas partly profit-driven, partly bureaucratic system is expensive, and sometimes wasteful, but the pursuit of profit reduces waste and costs and gives the world the improvements in medicine that ease pain and save lives.

[America] is the country of medical innovation. This is where people come when they need treatment, Dr. Gratzer says.

Literally were surrounded by medical miracles. Death by cardiovascular disease has dropped by two-thirds in the last 50 years. Youve got to pay a price for that type of advancement.

Canada and England dont pay the price because they freeload off American innovation. If America adopted their systems, we could worry less about paying for health care, but wed get 2009-level care—forever. Government monopolies dont innovate. Profit seekers do.

On this note, Paul stressed that problems in health care were created by too much government interference, and that the only way to fix the system was to increase competition, not restrict it.

The Republican candidate for Senate highlighted FEMAs botched efforts to distribute water bottles at the superdome after Hurricane Katrina as an example of the failings of government-run health care.

They cant even distribute water, theres no way they can distribute health care, said Paul.

The Senatorial candidate also said that with 46 million new people on government assistance, the new system could bankrupt medicare and lead to rationing for everyone. Doctors who have already tolerated shrinking wages for the last fifteen years would also leave the U.S. warned Paul, creating a vacuum.

Its intellectually dishonest for Democrats to say its going to cost $874 billion, but its really not going to add anything to the deficit. I dont think the American public believes that, added Paul.

Paul pointed out that the longer the debate raged about health care, the more people opposed the governments proposals, emphasizing why the Obama administration is hell-bent on ramming through the legislation later this week on Christmas Eve...

  • @andytalksnonsense I am English too and i agree that i have not waiting 18months for anything. Though i do recall about 5 years ago there being a lot of major operations being reported all the time which took about 18 months....so Blair had to pump even more money (As thats all labour does to solve problems) to make times improve...which they did...lots! Obama will say it costs X but then will end up costing XXX!

  • I'm English and I've never waited 18 months for a doctor. If I'm not feeling well I call up my surgery at 8am and by 11am I've seen my doctor, picked up my prescription and walked home. I've never paid for a doctor, dentist or operation in my life. I even have an EHIC card for healthcare on the continent. Sorry, this man is an idiot, pure and simple.

  • DOES ANYONE KNOW A SPEECH ON YOUTUBE THAT SAYS THE WORD PREPARE??

  • YOUR RAND IS NOT THE THE HEAD OF THE SENATE....HE'S JUST A VOTE....HIS BILL WILL NOT PASS JUST LIKE THE OTHER NEWBEES..IN OFFICE...GET IN THE BACK OF THE LINE RAND....THE OLDER SENATORS WILL TELL YOU WHAT TO DO.....CAN YOU SAY...VETO

  • @srspower Also... in regards to your comment about being prescribed medicine that isn't needed to make money... I'm sorry but that is an uninformed and ignorant statement. Doctors don't get paid anymore money by prescribing patients one drugs versus the other... nor do they get paid more by prescribing any drug versus prescribing no drug... please be careful with statements like that.

  • @srspower... The answer to your question is simple. Capitalism & Free Market competition force prices downward and promote price transparency. This aids the poor as it will make it easier for them to afford quality coverage. Also... the number of legal citizens who cannot currently afford health care is extremely low in the US. I hope this makes sense

  • @fromthispoint I hope to god this was on purpose because if not dear lord

  • How does increasing capitalism in healthcare help people who have no money to pay for it? Also capitalism in healthcare means you are going to be prescribed drugs you don't need so they can make money. Ive seen the adverts for legal drugs on US TV its a disgrace.

  • Bush care? you would have been waiting............ forever.
