10:02 "Don't wave too soon" That`s just unbelievable. Gee, he didn't seem to be going that slowly for the revs to drop...thank goodness though he finally got that championship.
@flipsidedogchop Thats what Williams wanted all thier dumb ass staff to say to the media. So fuck off and take the truth like a wanker brit that you are...
Thinking about it more, the only thing you could accuse mansell of is that he was taking it so easy, that as he coasted around the hairpin, he was going so slowly the cars revs dropped so low he stalled it, but did that happen?...na
Hahaha all you armchair experts thinking that you know what happened.
This is despite David Brown (race engineer) backing up Mansell, This is despite the fact that they'd had problems with the semi-automatic gearbox at every race except monte carlo, This is despite the fact that 2 weeks before, mansell claimed after finishing 2nd in monte carlo that TWICE his engine cut out and had to restart in manually.....
but hey, never let the truth get in the way of a good story, yea?
After this race I ceased to be a fan of Nigel Mansell.
He simply hit the kill switch for the electronics. Everybody makes mistakes but Nigel refused to admit it, choosing instead to state that the car suffered a hydraulic failure that caused the gearbox to stop working.
There was a time when I believed Mansell was a gentleman and that he was haunted by bad luck season after season. Now I know both of these things to be false. Nigel Mansell was extremely quick and technically adept, but he was absolutely hopeless at preserving his car. Mansell could never face up to anything and always blamed everything and everybody for his own errors. This incident is a perfect example. I remember him claiming that "the on-board computer shut down". Bullshit, Nige! Yet again!
When they got the car back to the pits the mechanics fired it up and it worked fine. Mansell had initially complained that it had just died on him and did not want to admit fault!
Yes, he hit the kill switch. It was an incredibly stupid move by Mansell. There was a group of Brazilians sitting behind us and they were sad because Senna had dropped out early in the race. I told them to start waving their flag because Brazilian Nelson Piquet was about to inherit the win even though he was some 53 seconds behind!
I was sitting in that final hairpin when Mansell stalled out. Notice at the beginning of the final lap (10:00) that Bob Varsha warned of waving to the crowd before the final lap is finished.

@28jaguar did you see him retiring there? or was that something else you wanted to see?

@loetkoe27 you're dreamin' bud. ,he waved his hand exiting turn 2, or 3, if the bend at the start of the straight counts as a turn.
