LOW and FAST! P-51s at Reno round Pylon 8, their powerful Merlin engines CRANKED! Turn UP the sound!

In 2002, I was out at the pylons at the Reno Championship Air Races and captured some Great Warbird footage. I viewed it once but never posted it. I ran across it again over my 2010 Christmas vacation and decided to edit the video and share the experience.

Normally I shoot on a tripod, but I had to go handheld because the planes were just too close and fast to follow. Plus, from right to left, the follow is greater than 180 degrees. I used a broadcast quality shotgun microphone - the sound quality is simply the best!

My old Sony VX-2000 is an SD (standard definition) camera, and the video was cropped for widescreen. Wish I had the HD back then.

I'll post more clips as time permits, such as the Gold race that was shot from pylon 3.

It really depends on what you want to see. Red Bull racers are stunt planes, where maneuverability plus horsepower wins the race. Unlimited Air racers are the fastest prop/piston planes in the world, and sheer horsepower and speed wins the race. Nothing beats the sound of WWII planes rounding the pylons though ...

@pixelguru i absolutely agree. i grew up about 3 miles from the reno-stead airport in the late seventies and eighties. my friends and i would ride our bikes out to the different pylons and watch these races every september. the sight of these unlimited racers coming down to the racecourse at full throttle was amazing! hearing the planes in this video gave me chills!

@ziegle9876 redbull is a timed event and not a race at all, a race against the clock maybe. A true race is when there are two or more competitors fighting for the same air space and a first place finsh. I have sat right in the stands where the came in for tha start and sound of all those piston pumping and the fire breating ear pounding exhaust is a thrill!!!!!!!!
