Girls dealing with tragedy get to meet Selena Gomez at Mid-State Fair

A break from the grief for two local children dealing with the death of their father. Derrick Rush was discovered dead in the Kern River near Bakersfield last Saturday. He had disappeared a week earlier while camping there. The California Men's Colony Officer left behind two daughters. Six-year old Cameron and ten-year old Corey. With the help of KSBY and the California Mid-State Fair the girls got a much-needed night away from the heartache.

The girls grandmother Karen called KSBY to see if there was anything we could do to help them get tickets to the Selena Gomez concert on Monday night at the Mid-State Fair. Selena is the girls favorite singer and KSBY was able to get them floor seats to the concert. People at the Mid-State Fair did one better by getting the girls back stage to meet Selena before the concert.

It was a welcome surprise for the girls dealing with an unspeakable tragedy. "I don't think they quite understand. My oldest, I'll catch her crying sometimes and then other times they are pretty normal. I think with time is what's going to be the hardest because they're so used to seeing their dad half the time" says the girls mother Christina.

Christina was clearly relieved to see her girls smiling as they got the thrill of meeting the Disney Star who is best known for her role in the Emmy-Award winning Disney Channel show, "Wizards of Waverly Place."

"They've spent the last week picking out Derrick's plot at the cemetery, picking out his casket, his headstone. Writing letters to him to put into his casket. This is actually a time for them to actually just take a break, have a breather. Have a fun night" says Christina.

Wednesday is Derrick Rush's funeral.
