@theekrusher I guess passion is something difficult to convey though, as what is one man painting his soul on a musical canvas may to you sound like 5 crochets and it may very well be just that! However if he or she is expressing themselves by that then who are we to be critical? Its music and it's subjective so celebrate that we all have different tastes or it would all be boring! So you may think x about Y and I may think Z about A but why bicker about things that are personal? :)

You've got to be kidding me. If there's any bass player who plays with feeling and emotion it's Jaco! Have you heard Continuum, Portrait of Tracy, Bright Size Life, A Remark You Made, Sirabhorn, Hejira, Refuge of The Roads etc.? I very much doubt that you have, because those songs are textbook examples of how to play a bass with feeling and emotion.

He's not just using the Dorian mode. there's a lot of chromaticism all the way through. that being said, the tonal centre is D, so you'd have to say that it's in D. Otherwise what's to say that it's not in Aeolian mode on A or Phrygian mode on F?!
