Taken around 6:00 p.m. in Kichijoji, as people shop for food on the way home. Naturally, Kichijoji is full of people doing something or other all the time, but at 6:00 p.m. on a weekday (Thursday, October 22nd, 2009, in this case), shops selling prepared food especially do their best business as people go from work to home.

That's definitely one of the better aspects to Japan - lack of litter on the streets. - LHS

It strikes me how the streets are free of litter. Over here, places similar to that have peices of paper and what not all over the walkway...

The complete absence of car traffic within this shopping area helps too. Without having to dodge large moving machinery, it's a lot more enjoyable to walk around and look at things. One vendor I talked to a several years ago though, told me that the bigger people's refrigerators get, the worse his business seems to be. Back when people tended to have very small refrigerators, they needed to shop more often. - LHS

Japan has the BEST "to-go" food on the planet. My wife is from KOIWA and we stay with her parents every year when we visit Tokyo. I love going to the Station Center & food shopping. Even the convenience stores have good "ready to eat" food. I noticed that most people shop for that particular day's supper on the way home in Japan, unlike the USA where people grocery shop once a week or so. Of course most of us in smaller towns have to drive everywhere because there is no train or subway system.
