When he brought his accordion to the Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif on the New Year's festival of Norouz, reporter Gregory Warner was hoping to jam with some traditional Afghan musicians. He didn't realize he'd be asked to get on stage and play a tune.

But why was Johnny Cash such a hit? Hear the rest of the story at http://www.wnyc.org/shows/radiolab/episodes/2008/03/21

  • They need to show this to all the redneck a-holes who think we need to nuke Mecca. Afghans and us, we're not so different after all.

  • @BoboCarsi - The rednecks don't know that. ;) Point is, people are people wherever you go.

  • خيلى ممنون

  • hahaha, that's awesome

  • OK...now that was funny. The Afghanis should do more of this and less of the running through the streets killing people! They should allow women in and have a real Hoe Down.

  • @WH1096 They don't have a clue what he's saying. If you'll read the clip description, they don't recognize the words as a Johnny Cash song, they recognize the tune as an Ahmed Zahir song. Zahir was huge over there, releasing Arab versions of popular American songs. The reason they get into it so quickly is that EVERYONE knows that song over there.

As for the women, yeah. You're right. That's a problem but hey, one step at a time, and killing them sure isn't going to fix that.

  • @DancesWithLobsters Did you ever think they didn't have a clue what he was saying? And did you notice there were no women anywhere in the crowd?

  • @BoboCarsi Try explaining that to the people who think there'd ever be a good reason to nuke Mecca.

  • @DancesWithLobsters What does Afghans have to do with Mecca? It isn't anywhere near Afghanistan.

  • move over Ali,JC is the widest known!
