The only historical record of the siege is the Trajan's Column, which is a controversial source. There is debate as to whether the Romans did actually fight for Sarmizegetuza, or whether the Dacians destroyed their capital while fleeing ahead of the advancing legions. Most historians agree that a siege of Sarmizegetuza actually took place.

The first assault was repelled by the Dacian defenders. The Romans bombarded the city with their siege weapons and, at the same time, they built a platform to more easily breach the fortress. They also encircled the city with a circumvallatio wall.

Finally, the Romans destroyed the water pipes of Sarmizegetuza and obliged the defenders to surrender before they set fire to the city. Roman forces succeeded in entering the Dacian sacred enclosure, hailed Trajan as emperor, and then leveled the whole fortress. IV Flavia Felix was stationed there to guard the ruins of Following the conclusion of the siege, Bicilis, a confidant of Decebalus, betrayed his king, and led the Romans to the Dacian treasure which, according to Jerome Carcopino consisted of 165,000 kilograms of pure gold and 331,000 kilograms of silver in the bed of the Sergetia River (Cassius Dio 68.14).

  • @SaintLouisX Roman troops trained the ability to form a testudo some time after the marian reformation of the army. This battle took place "way later" than marius' time. These troops would be imperial legions, a little different than marian(note the armor). Also, hastati never formed testudo, they were gone by that time. Your first statement is correct, just clarifying the topic ;-)

  • @shiyboy4 Roman troops didn't have the Testudo until (I think) Gaius Marius' reforms, which I'm not sure if that had happened at the time this battle was fought, it was around this time though.

But even after those reforms, I'm not sure if the Hastii even get the Testudo, or if it's only the better-trained more professional troops, at least in terms of the game.

  • the twits need to stay up on their general platform

  • dont they know about the Testudo

  • @toweronepower he escaped with a little of his bodyguard but suicided so he didn't have the humiliation of beign held capture by romans.

  • @toweronepower He got out the city, but was murdered in a week.

  • @Tareltonlives Escaped momentarily?

  • They're not inept, but they're sloppy. Basic competence but no finesse. Not bad at all. I would have attacked separately with the catapults at one section and the towers at another, perhaps the gate.

In real life, Trajan did siege the town. Less causalities, but King Decebalus did escape momentarily.
